This Day In Trumpet History

1897 Albert Sutphen, American trumpeter, member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago (1922-3), member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (1926-7), school band director, born in Columbus, Ohio.

1925 Alexandre Petit, French cornetist, second prize recipient at the Paris Conservatory in 1881, solo cornet in the Arban Band (1881-4), the Garde Républicaine (1896-7), solo cornet with the Opéra-Comique, soloist on cylinder recordings on the Pathé label, teacher at the Paris Conservatory (1910-25), teacher of René Voisin, composer of numerous solos for cornet and piano, died in Paris, France.

1938 Dan McMillion, American jazz trumpeter, flugelhornist, valve trombonist, born in Mount Hope, West Virginia.

1954 Ken Brader III, American jazz trumpeter, born in Easton, Pennsylvania.

1960 Deborah Plylar, American trumpeter, coprincipal in the Winston-Salem Symphony Orchestra and the Piedmont Opera Orchestra, member of the Southwest Brass Quintet, born in Durham, North Carolina.

1965 Eduard Seifert, German trumpeter, principal trumpet of the Cologne Theater Orchestra (1894-5), principal of the Dresden Royal Orchestra (1895-1935), close friend of Richard Strauss, nicknamed "The Infallible," premiered the opera "The Trumpeter of Säckingen," soloist in 1909 performance of the Haydn Concerto in E-flat in Dresden, died in Dresden, Germany at the age of 95.

1983 Edward Masacek, American trumpeter, cornet soloist in the U.S. Army Band ("Pershing's Own), 2nd and 4th trumpet with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (1921-1946), died in Norridge, Illinois.
