I play an 8 due the formation of my teeth. There are also gradations in millimeters particularly between 15 to 17. The 8 is 16.2 diameter. The 8 1/2 is a little smaller at 16.10. Then there is also the 8 3/4 at 15 something, yet smaller. Rims vary also .My yearly workload includes orchestra, brass quintet, Big band (Jazz chair usually), small jazz group and an occasional session. I try to usde the same mouthpiece for all./ My study includes Rinehardt, Caruso and finally Vince Penserella.
