Dizzy Gillespie, iconic American jazz trumpeter, known for his upturned trumpet and puffed out cheeks while playing, member of the Teddy Hill Band, the Edgar Hayes Orch, the Cuban Alberto Soccaras, Cab Calloway’s orchestra (fired with an altercation with Calloway which was later reconciled), from 1942-44 played with Eckstine’s band, formed quintet with Charlie Parker (1945) which began bebop movement, formed his own big band (first unsuccessful, second successful especially in France), introduced Cuban and African elements into his music, Grammy lifetime achievement awardee, given Hollywood star, died in Englewood, New Jersey.
