This Day In Trumpet History

1826 Theodor Richter, German cornetist, trumpeter and conductor, played with the Imperial Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra in 1840s, first trumpet teacher of the Moscow Conservatory, born in Dessau, Saxony.

1940 Allan Botschinsky, Danish trumpeter and composer, joined Ib Glindemann's Big Band, part of a backup band for visiting American musical acts, led his own quintet, attended Manhattan School of Music (1963-64), solo trumpeter with the Danish Radio Big Band (1964-82), began to compose mostly classical music, born in Copenhagen, Denmark.

1941 Herbert Koerselman, American trumpeter, principal trumpet in the Portland Symphony Orchestra (1964-65), assistant/2nd of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra (1966-68), taught at Central Missouri State Univ. (1968-74), trumpet prof. at Illinois State (1974-82), chair of music school at Sam Houston State (1982-92), dean of music at University of Louisville, born in George, Iowa.

1942 Alexander Lemos, Ukrainian cornetist, played at the Mariinsky Theatre and then in the St. Petersburg/Petrograd Opera from 1903-1922, died in Leningrad, Russia.

1943 Jean-Claude Blanc, Swiss trumpeter, member of the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, born in Vauderens, Switzerland.

1945 Mark Schrello, American trumpeter, member of the US Marine Band (1968-72), principal Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, Swedish Radio Orchestra, born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

1949 Louis Ranger, performed with Boston Symphony Orchestra while student at Boston University, member of American Brass Quintet, American Symphony Orchestra, coprincipal of the NY Phil, born in Syracuse, NY.

1976 Nathaniel Mayfield, American trumpeter, Presidential Scholar, winner of the ITG solo competition in 1998, Fulbright scholar to Germany, director of music for the Austin School for the Performing and visual Arts, teacher at Concordia University and Texas A&M Univ., member of the NEXT Ensemble, born in Austin, Texas.

2001 Milton Batiste, American trumpeter and vocalist, played with Little Richard, Della Reese, Jimmy Reed, Fats Domino, suffered diabetes and heart disease, died in New Orleans, Louisiana.
