This Day In Trumpet History

1914 Leona May Smith, American cornetist and trumpeter, soloed in Edwin Franko Goldman's band at 11, played in the Boston Women's Symph Orch, Fred Waring's dance orch, Phil Spitalney's All-Girl Orch, played at Radio City Music Hall, featured soloist in many groups, principal trumpet of the Brooklyn Symph Orch, substitute with the Met Opera (after 1953), born in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

1921 Irving Sarin, American trumpeter, played with Boston Pops while student, principal of Pittsburgh Symp Orch, principal of the Israel Philharmonic, played with the MGM Concert Orch, National Symphony, Wichita Symph, taught at Univ of Wichita, Michigan State Univ, born on this day.

1936 Max Schlossberg, Latvian trumpeter and renowned teacher, bandmaster of the 171st Regiment Band in Riga, defected to U.S. in 1902 (citizen of U.S. in 1914), brass teacher at the Hebrew Orphan Asylum, played in the Gilmore Band, played in the New York Philharmonic-Symphony from 1910 to 1936 (4th and 2nd trumpet), taught at the Institute of Musical Art (now Juilliard), known as a very kind man, died in Bethlehem, New Hampshire.

1946 Ernest Pechin, American cornetist, assistant soloist for Bohumir Kryl (1909-1911), assistant to H.L. Clarke in Sousa's band, soloist with the Rochester Municipal Band, soloist with the Innes Band, soloist and assistant conductor with Conway's band and then with the Anglo-Canadian Leather Co. band, principal tpt and cornet soloist with Chicago Theater Symph Orch, died in Orlando, Florida.

1962 Mark Bennett, British trumpeter, renowned as performer on baroque and keyed trumpets, performed with the English Consort, Orch of the Age of Enlightenment, English Baroque Soloists, modern trumpeter with the London Philharmonic Orch, Royal Phil Orch, London Brass and the LSO, lead in Broadway show, Cats, taught at the Royal College of Music, born in London, England.

1965 Marco Blaauw, Dutch avant-guard trumpet soloist, born in Lichtenvoorde, Nederland

1965 Marco Blaauw, Dutch trumpeter, renowned as new music specialist, member of musikFabrik in Cologne, frequent soloist and recording artist, known for playing a two-bell trumpet with five valves, born in Lichtenvoorde, Holland.

2006 Malcolm Arnold, British trumpeter, composer and conductor, 2nd tpt in the London Philharmonic Orch in 1942 (principal in 1943), assigned to Army band, which he didn't like so he shot himself in the foot to return to civilian life, played 1 season with the BBC Symph, returned to principal with LPO for 2 years, quit playing to compose and conduct, earned an Academy Award, hospitalized for depression and alcoholism but recovered, knighted in 1993, died in Norwich, England.
