This Day In Trumpet History

1852 Edward Lafricain, Canadian-born American trumpeter, member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (1894-7; third), Boston Promenade Concerts Orchestra, principal in BSO (1887-88), performed the Messiah for the Haydn & Handel Society in 1887, born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

1930 Milorad Pavlovic, Servian jazz trumpeter, solo trumpet in the Radio Orchestra of Belgrade, member of Berlin Big Band (1956) and Kurt Edelhagen's legendary All Star Big Band in Cologne (1957-67), teacher in Montenegro, born in Belgrade, Serbia.

1937 Joe Smith, American jazz trumpeter, joined the Black Swan Jazz Masters, toured with Mamie Smith, known for smooth and melodic style of playing (leading to cool jazz), died in NYC.

1954 Bruce Hellmers, Australian trumpeter, principal of the Elizabethan Theatre Trust Orch, taught at Scots College in Sydney and at the Sydney Conservatorium, principal of the Australian Opera and Ballet, member of the New Holland Chamber Brass, born in Sydney, Australia.

1959 ydney Desvigne, American trumpeter and bandleader, played in various New Orleans café bands, the Excelsior Brass Band, Maple Leaf Orchestra, and many others, joined Fate Marable's riverboat band (and later led this band), established his own big band and nightclub, died in Pacoima, California.

1971 Ernest Miller ("Kid Punch"), American trumpeter, joined army in WWI in the 419th Labor Battalion as bugler, after service moved to New Orleans joining Jack Carey, led his own bands, notably the Zulu Band, leading musician in New Orleans in the 1920s, recorded with many artists, died in New Orleans, Louisiana.

1984 David Guerrier, French trumpet and horn soloist, won many competitions: Concours Lutèce, Markneukirchen, Porcia, Maurice André, Young Concert Artists Guild, Munich ARD, soloed with many orchestras world-wide, principal horn with the Orchestre National de France (2004), performs regularly on period instruments, featured television soloist in France, born in Pierrelatte, France.

1999 Robert King, American publisher, established the Boston Brass Quartet (1936-1960), first published in 1940, full-time publisher with Robert King Music starting in 1954, supporter of the Boston Symphony Orch, died on this day.

2005 Maurice Harris, American trumpeter and son of Russian immigrants, studio performer at MGM, recorded many film soundtracks, died in Palm Desert, California.
