This Day In Trumpet History

1918 Konstantin Serostanov, Russian trumpeter and conductor, prizewinner at the 1941 All-Union Competition of Performers, principal of the radio-television orchestra in Moscow (1938-50), member of the Stanislavsky & Nemirovich-Dnachenko Theatre Orchestra, conductor of the Moscow Chamber Orchestra (1962-73), taught at the Moscow Conservatory, born in Novokhopiersk, Russia.

1935 Rudolf Haase, German trumpeter, principal in the Schwerin State Chamber Orchestra (1957-8), taught at the Dresden School of Music (1960-80), principal of the Essen Philharmonic (1982-98), taught at the music school in Essen (1984-97), born in Kamenz, Germany.

1959 Mark Ridenour, American trumpeter, acting principal in the Memphis Symphony Orchestra (1985-6), principal of the Florida Orchestra (1988-94), assistant principal, later acting principal of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (1994-2005), taught at Roosevelt University, born in Kittanning, Pennsylvania.

1962 Fezile Faku, South African trumpeter, performed jazz with many of South Africa's prominent musicians, joined the Paul van Kemenade Quintet in the Netherlands, born in New Brighton, South Africa.

1963 Robert Vanryne, British trumpeter, specialist in historic trumpets, member of Passion of Brass, maker of replica baroque and classical trumpets, born in Oshey, England.

1978 Lester ("Shad") Collins, American jazz trumpeter, played with Charlie Dixon, Eddie White, Chick Webb, Benny Carter, Eubie Blake, Teddy Hill, Count Basie (1938-40), Lester Young, Cab Calloway (1941-46), Sam Taylor, died in NYC.
