This Day In Trumpet History

1916 Bob Scobey, American jazz trumpeter, 2nd trumpet in Lu Watter's Yerba Buena Jazz Band, played in an Army band during WWII, founded the Frisco Jazz Band, made many recordings, opened his Club Bourbon Street in Chicago, born in Tucumcari, New Mexico.

1932 Donald Byrd, very influential American jazz trumpeter, playwright, poet, painter, art collector, attorney, licensed pilot, impresario, student of William Vacchiano and Joe Alessi, freelance artist in New York, lived in Paris, studying with Nadia Boulanger and Maurice André(!), member of the Paris Jazz All Stars, educator with wide impact at Rutgers, Howard, the Hampton Institute, Delaware State, Queens College, New York University and Oberlin Conservatory, earning a law degree from Howard, born in Detroit, Michigan.

1934 James Ode, American trumpeter, principal in the US Army 9th Division Band while also playing in the Colorado Springs Symph Orch, taught at Augusta College (1961-63), professor at Ithaca College (1965-81), music dept chair at Trinity Univ, chair of music division at Southern Methodist Univ, born in Brandon, South Dakota.

1943 Jimmy Owens, American jazz trumpeter, played in Marshall Brown's Newport Youth Band (1959-60), freelanced in NYC in the early 1960s, played with Slide Hampton, Lionel Hampton, Maynard Ferguson, and many other jazz greats, led his own bop combos, member of the Art Nova, studio musician in NYC, led group called Jimmy Owens Plus, leader in many arts organizations, teacher at the New School Jazz and Contemporary Music Program, born in NYC.

1957 Dave Scott, American trumpeter, played in the Spokane Symphony Orch (1982-3), Louisville Orch (1983-5), San Angelo Symph Orch (1988-9), principal in the Midland-Odessa Symph Orch, and the Lake Charles Symph Orch, taught at the Univ of Idaho, Kentucky State Univ, and McNeese State Univ, born in Louisville, Kentucky.

1968 Ludovic Roux, French trumpeter, helped form Les Trompettes de Lyon, a very popular and entertaining trumpet ensemble, has won prizes in Lunéville and the Kiwanis Club, teaches at the Lezignan Corbière Conservatory, born in Narbonne, France.
