This Day In Trumpet History

1900 Bob Effros, American trumpeter, bugler in US Army during WWI, played in a by led by Bea Palmer, then with Vincent Lopez Orch, member of a house orchestra in Manhattan, formed his own dance orchestra in 1929, worked as studio player during the 1930s and 1940s, born in London, England.

1930 Michael Cuvit, Swiss trumpeter, principal in the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande (1963-87), teacher at the Geneva Conservatory, born in Geneva, Switzerland.

1935 Chuck Stine, American trumpeter, toured Europe with the 7th Army Symphony (1958-60), freelanced in Chicago area, managed stage band for the Chicago Lyric Opera for 30 years, taught at Roosevelt University, founder of Crown Music Press, born in Libertyville, Illinois.

1946 David Baldwin, American trumpeter, served in the West Point band (1969-71), member of the New Haven Brass Quintet, faculty at the Univ of Minnesota, performed with the Minnesota Brass Quintet, the Bach Chamber Players of St. Paul, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and the Minnesota Orch, leader of the Summit Hill Brass Quintet, published many compositions and arrangements, released many albums of etudes by Charlier, Bitsch, Caffarelli, and others, born in Alliance, Ohio.

1949 Lothar Hilbrand, Austrian trumpeter, performed and toured with the Laurentius von Schnifis brass ensemble, played baroque trumpet with the Altenburg Ensemble, member of the Vorarlberg Symph Orch, prof at the Vorarlberg State Conservatory, born in Dalaas, Austria.

1967 Leon Handzlik, American cornetist, at 17 was cornet soloist with the Homestead Carnegie Library Band in Pennsylvania, toured with Sousa, Innes, Pryor, performed at the 1915 World's Fair in San Francisco, soloist with the Panama Pacific Exposition Band, played in the 41st Division Band of the Pacific, led military bands in Portland, died in Multnomah County, Oregon.

2006 Esotto Pellegrini, American trumpeter, served in the Army Air Force Band in Italy during WWII, after service and after graduate school became high school band director, became member of the Youngstown Symphony Orch, member of the Warren Packard Band, began teaching at Youngstown State Univ (later full-time), died in Youngstown, Ohio.

2014 Miguel Martínez, Mexican trumpeter, composer and bandleader, important mariachi musician, became member of a local mariachi group when young, became member of the Mariachi Vargas when 21 and made thousands of recordings and more than 130 films, became friend of Rafael Méndez, played for one year with Mariachi México de Pepe Villa, eventually formed his own Mariachi Tolteca de Miguel Martínez (1965-70), composed many mariachi "standards", died in Mexico City.
