This Day In Trumpet History

1890 Vincent Bach (born Vincenz Schrottenbach), Austrian-born American cornetist and instrument maker, famous worldwide for his mouthpieces and brass instruments, studied engineering, while on solo tour in England, immigrated to the U.S. when WWI broke out, joined Boston Symphony, featured soloist in 1915 San Francisco Exposition, moved to NYC joining the Diaghilev Ballet orchestra at the MET opera house, enlisted in U.S. Army in 1917 and appointed bandleader of 306th Field Artillery Regiment Band and made quality mouthpieces for Army trumpeters who otherwise couldn't get them, from this beginning in mouthpieces started small brass instrument repair shop, opened factory in 1922, modeled his first trumpets on the French Besson, began the Vincent Bach Corporation in NYC in 1928, moved this to Mount Vernon, NY, in 1953, sold the company to Selmer in 1961 moving to Elkhart, Indiana, born in Baden, Austria.

1937 Robert Platt, American trumpeter, IU student of Bill Adam, studied in Berlin with Horst Eichler, won principal in Dortmund Opera and Symphony Orchestra, then member of the Gürzenich Orchestra in Cologne, member of the Berlin Philharmonic (1982-2002), teacher at the Berlin Hochschule der Künst, born in Ft. Wayne, Indiana.

1956 Rainer Auerbach, German trumpeter, principal trumpet in Städtischen Orchestra Chemitz and the Robert Schumann Philharmonic, then principal of the Berlin State Opera orchestra, teacher at Barenboim Academy of Music in Berlin, born in Zwickau, Germany.

1963 Eric Vloeimans, Dutch trumpeter, switched to jazz at the Rotterdam Academy of Music, went to NYC studying with Donald Byrd, played in big bands of Frank Foster and Mercer Ellington, returned to the Netherlands, received Edison Award and the VPRO/Boy Edgar Award, known for electronic special effects, born in Huizen, Netherlands.

1963 Dave Douglas, American jazz trumpeter, attended Berklee and NE Conservatory, dropping out to live in NYC to study and play on the streets, began to work with leading jazz groups such as Horace Silver, Vincent Herring, Mosaic Sextet, Don Byron's Klezmer Band, and his own groups, known for his innovative compositions fusing ethno-styles with jazz, recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, born in Montclair, New Jersey.

2020 Edward Tarr, American trumpeter who lived in Switzerland and Germany, formed a dance band and trad jazz group while a teenager, studied music history in Switzerland, began playing cornetto and, later, baroque trumpet with Walter Holy, became teacher at the Rheinische Musikschule in Cologne and principal of the Orchestra della RAI in Rome, began teaching baroque trumpet and cornetto at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis and modern trumpet at the Music Academy (both in Basel Switzerland), known for authoritative knowledge, research and writing on trumpet history, died in Rheinfelden, Germany.
