Bix Beiderbecke, important American jazz cornetist, self-taught, started professionally playing with a Chicago group called the Wolverines, played in a free-improvisational style that didn’t work well with some of his first employers, joined Paul Whiteman’s band in 1927, recorded Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F, suffered from alcoholism, born in Davenport, Iowa.
