Bubber Miley, American jazz trumpeter, served in Navy (1918-19), played with Carolina Five, Mamie Smith’s Jazz Hounds (recording in 1921-22), Thomas Morris’ Past Jazz Masters and others, eventually playing with Duke Ellington, composed Black and Tan Fantasy, created the “jungle sound” with plunger over straight mute, left Ellington for excessive drinking, played for some years more with other bands, born in Aiken, South Carolina.
