This Day In Trumpet History

1825 Julius Kosleck, German cornetist and trumpeter, joined the 2nd Infantry Foot Guards' Regiment Band (1853-1893), first trumpet of the Königliche Kapelle in Berlin, important cornet soloist throughout Europe, formed the Kaiser-Cornet-Quartett (which performed at the 1872 World's Peace Jubilee in the U.S.), developed a 2-valved straight trumpet in low A to play Bach trumpet parts, taught at the Berlin Conservatory, published method for cornet and trumpet, taught Max Schlossberg and Paris Chambers, formed Kosleck's Brass Band, born in Naugard, Pomerania.

1828 Hippolyte Jean Duhem, Belgian trumpeter and cornetist, principal of the Royal Theater of the Monnaie, First Guard Regiment band, taught at the Brussels Conservatory (1860-88), cornet soloist with the Kursaal Orchestra (1870-71), commissioned a piston high D trumpet from Courtois to be made (first of its kind), born in Paris, France.

1961 Peter Margulies, American trumpeter, 2nd, later associate principal, trumpet in Utah Symphony, born in Palo Alto, California.

1999 Leona May Smith, American cornetist and trumpeter, soloed in Edwin Franko Goldman's band at 11, played in the Boston Women's Symph Orch, Fred Waring's dance orch, Phil Spitalney's All-Girl Orch, played at Radio City Music Hall, featured soloist in many groups, principal trumpet of the Brooklyn Symph Orch, substitute with the Met Opera (after 1953), died in Providence, Rhode Island.

2002 Erik Schultz, Canadian trumpeter, principal in the London (Canada) Orch, professor at the Univ of Western Ontario, died in London, Ontario, Canada.
