This Day in History: 1899-04-09

Arthur Briggs, Grenadian trumpeter, came to the U.S. in 1917, studying in NYC, became member of the Southern Syncopated Orchestra and went to London, staying and playing in several jazz bands, then worked in Paris and Belgium, recorded with his own band, the Savoy Syncopator’s Orchestra, played in several bands in Paris such as the Blackbirds Revue at the Moulin-Rouge, toured with the Noble Sissle Orchestra, performing for King George and Queen Mary at command performance, imprisoned by Germans and played in prison orchestra, later returning to performing and teaching in France, born in St. George’s Grenada, British West Indies.
