James Burke, American cornetist, right arm damaged at birth, learned to play trumpet with his father who built a device to help him play the trumpet, won a national solo championship at age 18, had cornet made to play with just left hand by the King Musical Instrument Company, joined the Goldman Band at age 19 (1943-76), also principal in the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and teacher at the Peabody Conservatory, premiered Robert Russell Bennett’s Rose Variations, with Harvey Phillips cofounded the All-Star Concert Band, born in Port Jefferson, New York.
