Red Allen, American jazz trumpeter, learned and played with his father, by late teens playing with Barney Bigard and many other great New Orleans musicians, joined Kind Oliver’s band in 1928, then Luis Russell’s band in 1929, recorded on Victor Records, known for many extended techniques (growls, flutter-tonguing, trills, bends), played with Fletcher Henderson’s orchestra, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, formed group with Sidney Bechet in 1941, then led own band in Chicago, led band at the Metropole (1954-65), toured Europe with Kid Ory, prominent soloist at 1965 Monterey Jazz Festival, died in NYC.
