This Day In Trumpet History

1916 Harry Herforth, American trumpeter, studied with Georges mater, after WWII, joined the BSO, played with the Cleveland Orch, taught at Kent State Univ, in retirement played in jazz band, born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

1926 Raffaele ("Nini") Rosso, Italian jazz trumpeter and composer, his composition, Il Silenzio, sold over 10M copies, played in RAI in Rome, born in Turin, Italy.

1937 Bill Phillips, Canadian trumpeter and conductor, principal of the Hamilton Phil Orch, principal of the Winnipeg Symphony Orch and CBC Winnipeg Orch, assistant conductor of the Lausanne Chamber Orch, played in the BBC Symphony Orch and English Chamber Orch, founding member of the Canadian Brass, born in Guelph, Canada.

1940 Bo Nilsson, Swedish trumpeter, played in the Royal Air Force Band, after service joined the Symphony Orchestra of the City of Norrköping, then won 2nd in the Malmö Symphony Orch, taught Håkan Hardenberger and Ole Edvard Antonsen, born in Stockholm, Sweden.

1969 Cuong Vu, Vietnamese jazz trumpeter and singer, award winning recording artist, member of Jeff Song's Lowbrow and Orange Then Blue, member of the Pat Methany Group, led several groups, born in Saigon, Vietnam.

2002 Johnny Best, American jazz trumpeter, worked with Hank Biagnini, Les Brown Orch, Glenn Miller band, in WWII played in Artie Shaw's band in the Navy, after service joined the Benny Goodman Orch, Billy May's orch, Ray Conniff, died in La Jolla, California.

2005 William Vacchiano, American trumpeter, studied with Schlossberg, won 3rd/assistant principal (later principal) in the New York Philharmonic (a 38 year career), taught at the Juilliard School for 62 years, died in NYC.

2008 Richard Sudhalter, American jazz trumpeter and author, moved to Europe, teaching English and playing in the Bavarian State Radio jazz ensemble, played with many great jazz players during the 1960s while working as a correspondent for United Press Inter., returning to NYC, played in the New York Jaa Repertory Co, wrote controversially about white contributions to jazz, died in NYC.
