This Day In Trumpet History

1893 Walter Emerson, American cornetist, started as bugler, replaced Matthew Arbuckle for a Patrick Gilmore European tour, memorized over three hundred solos, performed on a large-bore Courtois cornet, died in Boston, Massachusetts.

1904 Valaida Snow, American jazz trumpeter (and player of cello, bass, violin, banjo, mandolin, accordion, clarinet, saxophone), played in shows as star performers by her early 20s, featured in the Broadway musical In Bamville (1924), performed in Shanghai with the Jack Carter Band (1926), headliner at the Sunset Café in Chicago (1928), toured Soviet Union, Middle East in the Blackbirds show (1929), featured at the Théatre Saint-Martin in Paris (1930), played with Earl Hines, Coujht Basie, Teddy Weatherford and Fetcher Henderson, spend most of the 1930s in Europe, arrested and held at Wester-Faengle Nazi concentration camp (1940-42) until returned to U.S. in prisoner exchange, formed her own band and resumed performing in 1943 and into the 1950s, appeared in two films, one of the most glamorous and gifted musicians ever, born in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

1906 Rudolf König, Russian trumpeter, played in military bands (1923-6), at 18 became principal of the Leningrad Opera Orchestra (1924-37), born in St. Petersburg, Russia.

1919 Nikolay Rudoy ("Mikola Roudy"), Ukrainian trumpeter, served in military and played in dance band (1941-50), played in the Kiev Conservatory Opera Orchestra (1951-8) and the Ukrainian Symphony Orchestra (1958-), born in Pechera, Ukraine.

1921 Ernest Royal, American jazz trumpeter, played with Lionel Hampton's orchestra, joined navy playing in band during WWII, afterwards lead trumpeter with Count Basie (1946), Woody Herman's Second Herd, Charlie Barnet and Duke Ellington, moved to Paris for 2 years playing with Jacques Helian, returning to the states played with Wardell Gray, Stan Kenton, Gil Evans, ABC studio staff musician (1957-72), born in Los Angeles, California.

1942 Bunny Berigan, American jazz trumpeter, moved to NYC and played with Bix Beiderbecke in the Dorsey Brothers orchestra (1930) and in Hal Kemp's orchestra, worked as studio musician, played with Paul Whiteman's band, Benny Goodman, Fred Rich, Tommy Dorsey, started his own band in 1937 and declared bankruptcy in 1940, had problems with alcohol, died at 33 years old in NYC.

1945 Gerald Endsley, American trumpeter, cornet soloist and later principal cornet with the Denver Municipal Band, founded the Denver Brass Trio, Denver Municipal Band Brass Quintet, taught at the University of Denver and Metro State, conducted the Metro Community Band, founded Tromba Publications in 1970, Endsley Brass Mouthpieces in 1978, Clarion Records (1973) and has written many trumpet books, born in Denver, Colorado.

1964 Bernd von Hösslin, German trumpeter, principal of the Chursächsische Philharmonie Bad Elster, founder of the Re-Mi brass chamber group, taught at the Garmisch-Partenkirchen Music School, the Bavarian Music Academy and the Starnberg Music School, born in Peiting, Germany.

1964 Peter Mönkediek, German trumpeter, principal trumpet of the Westphalian Symphony Orchestra Recklinhausen (1991-2002), then the Symphony Orchestra of Münster (2001-2) and the WDR-Cologne Symphony Orchestra, performer at the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra, with the German Brass, taught at the Robert Schumann Hochschule, born in Ahaus, Germany.

1978 Bud Brisbois, American trumpeter, one of the best high note trumpeters of all time, hired by Stan Kenton to play lead parts (originally intended for Maynard Ferguson), studio musician on hundreds of albums as lead trumpeter (Hawaii-Five-O, The Jetsons), formed his own group (Butane), died in Scottsdale, Arizona.

1997 Doc Cheatham, American jazz trumpeter, played in pit band for the Bijou Theatre in Nashville, played many famous early jazz groups, moved to NYC playing with Sam Wooding's orchestra, and others, lead trumpet with Cab Calloway's band, had some health problems in late 1930s, resumed playing with Teddy Wilson, and others, worked in many Latin bands and some Trad jazz bands in the late 1950s and 60s, member of Benny Goodman Quintet (1966-7), taught himself how to improvise in his 60s and became a great soloist, died in Washington, DC.
