This Day In Trumpet History

1898 Gugush Tarayan, Armenian trumpeter, teacher at the Yerevan Music College and Conservatory, member of the Yerevan Opera Orchestra, born in Igdyr, Turkey.

1905 Sidney De Paris, American jazz trumpeter, performed with Charlie Johnson's Paradise Ten (1926-31), Fetcher Henderson, Mezz Mezzrow, Jelly Roll Morton, Sidney Bechet, Willie (the Lion) Smith and the Roy Eldridge big band, formed his own band (1947), with declining health played tuba in the 1960s, known for his growling, swinging style, born in Crawfordsville, Indiana.

1913 George ("Pee Wee") Erwin, American swing trumpeter, played with Joe Haymes (1931-3), Isham Jones, (1933-4), Freddie Martin (1934), in NYC worked as studio musician appearing on several Let's Dance radio programs, played with Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey, formed his own successful traditional jazz band (1949), ran a trumpet school in the 1960s, recorded many albums, born in Falls City, Nebraska.

1913 Lloyd Geisler, American trumpeter, principal in the National Symphony Orchestra (1936-69), played in US Navy Band during WWII, assistant conductor for the NSO in 1957, associate conductor in 1961, retired from the NSO in 1973, taught at Peabody and Catholic University of America, first president of the ITG, performed anthem at 1968 Super Bowl III, born in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

1914 Bobby Sherwood, American trumpet player and versatile player of many other instruments, actor, leader of his own band, composer of two hit recordings, born in Indianapolis, Indiana.

1926 Tony Terran, American trumpeter, toured with Horace Heidt, stayed in Los Angeles as studio musician, played on the I Love Lucy Show, played on more than 10,000 recordings, back hundreds of artists, received the "Most Valuable Player Award" from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences in 1974, born in Buffalo, New York.

1929 Clora Bryant, American jazz trumpeter, played with the Sweethearts of Rhythm (1948-9), Jack McVea's orchestra (all-female), the Sepia Tones, Charlie Parker, Billie Holiday, Dizzy Gillespie and Eric Dolphy, Louis Armstrong, Carl Perkins and Dexter Gordon, led her own quartet in 1957, played in show bands in Los Angeles, first woman jazz performer to tour the Soviet Union, given the Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz award (2002 and 2004), born in Denison, Texas.

1935 Harry Beckett, West Indian jazz trumpeter, moved to England, played with Jiver Hutchinson, several rock groups, Graham Collier's band, played with many important jazz musicians in London, born in Michael Parish, Barbados.

1956 Valaida Snow, American jazz trumpeter (and player of cello, bass, violin, banjo, mandolin, accordion, clarinet, saxophone), played in shows as star performers by her early 20s, featured in the Broadway musical In Bamville (1924), performed in Shanghai with the Jack Carter Band (1926), headliner at the Sunset Café in Chicago (1928), toured Soviet Union, Middle East in the Blackbirds show (1929), featured at the Théatre Saint-Martin in Paris (1930), played with Earl Hines, Coujht Basie, Teddy Weatherford and Fetcher Henderson, spend most of the 1930s in Europe, arrested and held at Wester-Faengle Nazi concentration camp (1940-42) until returned to U.S. in prisoner exchange, formed her own band and resumed performing in 1943 and into the 1950s, appeared in two films, one of the most glamorous and gifted musicians ever, died in New York, New York.
