This Day In Trumpet History

1639 Johann Christoph Pezel, German trumpeter, violinist and composer, became member of the Ratsmusiker (tower musician), appointed a Kunstgeiger in the Leipzig town band in 1664, promoted to Stadtpfeifer for life in 1670, published two surviving collections of tower music for five-part cornett and sackbut ensemble, as well as several pieces for trumpet in mixed chamber music, moved away from Leipzig because of the plague, born in Glatz, Silesia.

1879 Pierre Vignal, French cornetist and trumpeter, received first prized for cornet at Paris Conservatory in 1902, played at the Sirène de Paris, the Casino in Vichy, and the Concerts gang in Monte Carlo, solo trumpet at the Opéra in Paris and the Société des Concerts du Conservatoire (1920-37), known for ability to play high Bach parts, first in France to play Haydn's trumpet concerto, professor of trumpet at Paris Conservatory (1925-43), taught René Voisin, born in Isserteaux, France.

1920 Louis Vannetelbosch, Belgian trumpeter, performed for the Belgian television and radio orchestras (BRT and RTB), taught at Royal conservatory of Brussels, known for his etude books, born in Meerbeek, Belgium.

1942 Mario Guarneri, American trumpeter, member of the LA Phil (1960-83) taught at CalArts (1981-92), principal of LA Chamber Orch, studio musician, member of the LA Brass Quintet, teacher at San Francisco Conservatory, inventor of the B.E.R.P. in 1986, born in Oakland, California.

1961 Ander Bergerantz, Swedish jazz trumpeter, joined jazz quintet led by his father Sven that included his two brothers, worked as guest soloist with various jazz groups, named "Jazz Musician of the Year" in Sweden in 1993, featured soloist at Carnegie Hall, received many other awards, born in Malmö, Sweden.

1961 Uwe Komischke, German trumpeter, principal in Orchestra of Gelsenkirchen, principal in Munich Philharmonic, cofounder of Best of Brass Quintet, taught at the Richard Strauss Conservatory in Munich, prof at the Franz Liszt Hochschule fur Musik in Weimar, born in Schwelm, Germany.

1964 Benjamín Moreno, Spanish trumpeter, member of the Spanish National Youth Orch, principal of the Orquesta Sinfonica de la Radio Televisíon Española, played debut recital at the Theater of Champs Elysées, coach for several youth orchestra brass sections in Spain, taught at the Community Conservatory in Madrid, prof at the Royal Conservatory in Madrid in 2006, born in Málaga, Spain.

1970 Vance Woolf, New Zealand trumpeter, immigrated to U.S., studied at San Francisco Conservatory, played with the Westward Brass and Stockton Symphony Orch, won the Maurice Faulkner Award, principal of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orch, taught at Southeastern Louisiana Univ, although Hurricane Katrina caused him to leave, several benefit concerts raised enough money to help the LPO to reorganize and helped him move back, born in Motueka, New Zealand.

1972 Kenny Dorham, American jazz trumpet legend, played with Russell Jacquet, Dizzy Gillespie's band, the Bebop Boys, Billy Eckstine's orchestra, Lionel Hampton, Mercer Ellington, Charlie Parker's quintet, the Jazz Messengers (charter member), leader of the Jazz Prophets, member of Max Roach's quintet, taught at the Lenox School of Music, composed hundreds of well-known jazz tunes, died in NYC.

1980 Amanda Pepping, American trumpeter, member of the National Repertory Orch, the Brass Band of Battle Creek, developed a solo career, Fulbright to Germany studying baroque trumpet with Ed Tarr, faculty at Georgia State Univ, News Column Editor of ITG Journal, born in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

1980 Ibrahim Maalouf, Lebanese trumpeter, refugee from Lebanese civil war, relocated to Paris, France at age 7, studying trumpet, won fifteen trumpet competitions (age 19-23), often performs on the quarter-tone trumpet, plays classical and jazz, born in Beirut, Lebanon.

1990 Bill Hardman, American trumpeter, played with Todd Dameron, Tiny Bradshaw, Jackie McLean, Charles Mingus, several stints with Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Billy Higgins, won Downbeat Critic's Poll in 1973, moved to Paris in 1988, died in Paris, France.
