This Day In Trumpet History

1934 Yury Lukyanov, Russian trumpeter and composer, learned how to play jazz, principal trumpeter in the All-Union Cinematography Committee Orchestra, born in Moscow, Russia.

1940 Herbert Joos, German trumpeter and flugelhornist, member of the Karlsruhe Modern Jazz Quintet, Baden-Baden Free Jazz Ensemble, led his own groups in the 1970s, specialized in free jazz, born in Karlsruhe, Germany.

1950 Toru ("Tiger") Okoshi, Japanese trumpeter, son of a samurai warrior, heard Louis Armstrong in Japan and decided to become a jazz trumpeter, after graduating from Kwansei Gakuin University in music, went to Boston to study in Berklee College of Music, played with many great jazz artists, teacher at Berklee, co-wrote book Practice Method: Trumpet, born in Ashiya City, Hyogo, Japan.

1963 Guy Few, Canadian trumpeter, cornetist, pianist and singer, teacher and collaborative pianist at Wilfrid Laurier University, recording artist, born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.

1967 Randy Brooks, American trumpeter, played with Claude Thornhill (1942), formed band that performed at the Roseland Ballroom in NYC, partially paralyzed from one stroke in 1950 and another in 1958, retired in 1961, died in Springdale, Maine, in a fire at his mother's apartment at the age of 49.

1986 Horst Fischer, German trumpeter, big band trumpet soloist, member of the Leipzig Radio Orchestra, soloist and lead trumpet in the RIAS Orchestra in Berlin, suffered from alcoholism, died in Cologne, Germany.
