This Day In Trumpet History

1899 George ("Little Mitch") Mitchell, American jazz cornetist, moved to Chicago in 1919 to lead his own quartet and play with many groups there, played with Lil Armstrong-Hardin's band and King Oliver, born in Louisville, Kentucky.

1911 John ("Bugs") Hamilton, American jazz trumpeter, played with Chick Webb, Billy Kato, Bobby Neal, Kaiser Marshall, Fats Waller, and Eddie South, born in St. Louis, Missouri.

1923 Seymour Rosenfeld, American trumpeter, studied with Max Schlossberg, Ernest Williams and Saul Caston, played in the 102nd Infantry Band during WWII, member of the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo, principal in St. Louis Symphony (at 21 years of age), second trumpet in the Philadelphia Orchestra (1946-1988), died in Penn Valley, Pennsylvania.

1952 John Aley, American trumpeter, former professor at University of Wisconsin-Madison, born in Topeka, Kansas.

1952 John Aley, American trumpeter, member of the Wichita Symphony Orchestra, American Wind Symphony, taught at Wichita State University, member of the American Brass Quintet, taught at Aspen Music Festival, taught at Western Connecticut University and then at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, born in Topeka, Kansas.

1966 Steve Dunn, American trumpeter, taught at Ft. Lewis College, University of Denver, University of Oregon and finally at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, born in Dover, New Jersey.

1967 Aneel Summary, British trumpeter, freelance performer in pit orchestras, played in the Royal Philharmonic Pops Orchestra, Bob Brookmeyer's New Art Orchestra, Gansch & Roses, taught at the Gustav mahler Conservatory in Vienna, born in London, England.

1978 Trevor Neumann, German jazz trumpeter, studied at Eastman, won Downbeat Award for jazz, earned master of music degree from University of Miami, active freelance musician in NYC, Broadway musician, born in Frankfurt, Germany.

1988 Ken Colyer, British jazz trumpeter, joined Navy, but jumped ship and began playing in New Orleans, caught and deported back to England, formed Ken Colyer's Jazzmen, then the New Orleans Jazzmen, moved to South of France for health reasons, died in Les Issambres, France.

2006 Raphé Malik, American free-jazz trumpeter, moved to NYC, played with Cecil Taylor, died in Brattleboro, Vermont.
