This Day In Trumpet History

1908 "Kid" Howard, American trumpeter, formed his own "Hot Five" and then a larger band, played with Isaiah Morgan, the Eureka Brass Band, the Tuxedo Brass Band, led and recorded his own groups, suffered from alcoholism, born in New Orleans, Louisiana.

1928 Tommy Turrentine, American jazz trumpeter, born into a musical family, brother of famed Stanley, played with Snookum Russell's Band at age 16, joined Benny Carter's band (but fired because he couldn't sight read well), then played with George Hudson, Count Basie and Max Roach, lost prominence in the 1970s but made slight comeback in the 80s with Clarence Sharpe and Barry Harris and with Sun Ra, born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

1954 Jean-Luc Cappozzo, Frech jazz trumpeter, soloist in military band in Dijon, teacher of jazz at music school in Lyons, member of Les Emboutisseurs, La Marmite Infernale, Apollo trio and the Global Unity Orchestra, born in Belfort, France.

1963 David Ballou, American trumpeter, composer and arranger, teacher at many institutions including Berklee College of Music, Banff Centre for the Arts, Manhattan School of Music, Amherst College and Towson University, has toured with bands of Tommy Dorsey, Woody Herman, played in Broadway musicals, born in Warwick, Rhode Island.

1971 Garth Greenup, American trumpeter, played with the Chicago Civic Orchestra, principal of the Charleston Symphony, principal of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, silver medalist in 1998 Ellsworth Smith Competition, born in Corvallis, Oregon.

1974 Vladimir Drucker, Russian trumpeter, member of Shanghai Municipal Orchestra, principal of Los Angeles Philharmonic (1919-1945), player of French Besson B-flat trumpet with large and deep mouthpiece, died in Van Nuys, California.
