Gene Shaw, American jazz trumpeter, learned trumpet while in the Army during WWII, started playing with Lester Young, Yusef Lateef and others in a Detroit club within weeks of earnest study, moved to NYC and worked with Charles Mingus, after argument with Mingus quit music for a few years, then formed his own group and big band, born in Detroit, Michigan.
