This Day In Trumpet History

1667 Gottfried Reiche, astoundingly important first trumpeter of Bach (1723-34), Leipzig member of the Kunstgeiger (string guild) and Stadtpfeifer (city piper guild), Senior Stadt-pfeifer in 1719, commissioned by the Leipzig council for a portrait sitting with the artist E.G. Haussmann in 1727, composer of the famous Abblasen fanfare used on CBS Sunday Morning, born in Weissenfels, Germany.

1929 Arthur Laycock, British cornetist, principal cornet of St. Hilda's Band, bandmaster of the 1st Training Reserve Battalion Band and the 58th London Division Band in France, in brass bands winner of forty medals, thirty silver Challenge cups, four Championship Crystal Palace Medals, performer of command performance for the King and Queen of England, on a par with Jules Levy and H.L. Clarke, died in St. Austell, England.

1930 Don Goldie, American trumpeter, member of Paul Whiteman's band by age 14, performer with many great big bands, including Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa, studio musician, recording artist, born in Newark, New Jersey.

1943 Chuck Winfield, American jazz and rock trumpeter, member of Blood, Sweat & Tears (with Lew Soloff), performer with the Four Tops, the Supremes, and Cab Calloway, born in Monessen, Pennsylvania.

1954 Bert Truax, American trumpeter and composer, member of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, founder of the Bert Truax School of Trumpet, teacher at Texas A&M, born in San Rafael, California.
