Cootie Williams, American jazz trumpeter, by age 13 was touring and recording with the Young Family Band, replaced Bubber Miley in Duke Ellington’s band in 1929 and was featured frequently, played with the Benny Goodman orchestra as a featured soloing, started his own Cootie Williams Big Band, returned to the Ellington orchestra in 1962, after Duke’s death, stayed on with his son, Mercer, until 1980, known as significant composer and singer, born in Mobile, Alabama.
