Erskine Hawkins, American jazz trumpeter, went to Alabama State Univ. on a tennis scholarship and played in the jazz group, the Bama State Collegians, that eventually went professional and renamed as the Erskine Hawkins Orchestra, with a three-year stint at the Savoy Ballroom, continuing into the mid-50s, played at the Concord Hotel in the Catskill Mountain resort area, inducted into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame in 1978, born in Birmingham, Alabama.
