This Day In Trumpet History

1731 Johann Andreas Schachtner, Austrian trumpeter of German birth, moved to Salzburg to study with Johann Caspar Köstler, was a Hof-und-Feldtrompeter at the Salzburg court in 1754, known as fine cello and violin player, close friend of the Mozart family, likely premiered the L. Mozart Trumpet Concerto, became a Spielgraf in 1781, unsuccessfully tried to cure young Wolfgang Mozart's fear of the trumpet by surprising him with a blast, born in Dingolfing, Bavaria.

1804 Alphonse Leduc, French publisher, formed Éditions Alphonse Leduc, which has since become the largest publisher of trumpet and brass music in the world, born in Nantes, France.

1889 Richard Stegmann, German trumpeter and cornetist, one of the greatest orchestral trumpeters and teacher in the early 20th C., principal of the Tonhalle Orchestra in Zurich, principal of the Berlin Philharmonic, professor at the Bavarian State Conservatory, born in Schönau, Germany.

1930 Derek Garside, English cornetist and conductor, principal cornet with the C.W.S. Band in Manchester, conductor of the B&R Band, teacher at the Bradford Council Music Department, born in Brighouse, Yorkshire, England.

1954 Nick Norton, American trumpeter, principal of Utah Symphony Orchestra, born in Tyler, Texas.

1956 Mikhail Tabakov, Russian trumpeter, considered father of the Soviet School of trumpet playing, student of Willy Brandt and played in a brass quartet with him, principal trumpet in the Bolshoi orchestra, taught in Moscow Conservatory (1918-56), died in Moscow, Russia.
