Bix Beiderbecke, important American jazz cornetist, self-taught, started professionally playing with a Chicago group called the Wolverines, played in a free-improvisational style that didn’t work well with some of his first employers, joined Paul Whiteman’s band in 1927, recorded Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F, suffered from alcoholism, died in NYC.
