This Day in History: 1922-09-07

Joe Newman, American jazz trumpeter, played with the Valmore Vitor Band and the Eureka Brass Band when young, played with Lionel Hampton’s band in 1941, then with Count Basie’s orchestra, played  in the bands of J.C. Hunt and Illinois Jacquet, joined Benny Goodman’s band (1962-3), involved in jazz education with Jazz Interactions, joined the New York Jazz Repertory Company, born in New Orleans, Louisiana.
