Gilbert Johnson, American trumpeter, won principal in the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo while in school at Curtis Institute, offered principal in Buffalo Phil, but was drafted during Korean War to work on aircraft carriers (not playing trumpet), after war played with the Boston Pops, then principal in New Orleans Phil (1952-8), coprincipal then principal with the Philadelphia Orchestra (1958-1974), considered one of the best orchestral players of 20th Century, plagued by drinking problems later in life, prof at Univ of Miami, died in Miami, Florida.
