This Day In Trumpet History

1890 Heinrich Wohlgemuth, German trumpeter, principal of the Charlottenburg Opera orchestra in Berlin (1912-25), principal of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (1925-56), born in Bremen, Germany.

1918 Edwin Firth, English cornetist, at 14 won 3rd place in a solo competition at the Crystal Palace, 1st place in a competition in Bradford, featured soloist with Foden's Motor Works Band, recorded many solos from 1913 to 1917, died on this day on the battlefield in Varennes, France.

1926 Armando Ghitalla, American trumpeter, studied with Joseph Gustat, played in Navy dance band during WWII, studied with Vacchiano (1946-49), member of the NY City Opera and NY City Ballet orchestras, principal of Houston Symphony Orchestra, selected as 2nd for the Boston Symphony/1st in the Boston Pops, then in 1965 appointed principal of the BSO (delayed a year of treatment for cancer of the lip), retired in 1979, known as one of the world's first classical trumpet soloists, professor at Univ. of Michigan and later at Rice Univ., born in Alpha, Illinois.

1941 Franz Rossbach, German trumpeter, member of the municipal orchestra in Meißen, principal trumpet in the Infantry Regiment 134, 1st trumpet in the Kurkapelle Bad Elster and in the Zoological Gardens Orchestra in Frankfurt, principal of the Vienna Court Opera Orchestra and the Vienna Philharmonic (1892), performed the Haydn concerto with the Vienna Phil in 1908, famous teacher at Vienna Conservatory and Vienna Music Academy, died in Vienna, Austria.

1945 Roger Stoner, American trumpeter, won a job with the US Marine Band (Washington, DC) in 1968, trumpet professor at Univ. of Kansas (1973), chair of music department at Eastern Illinois Univ. (1999-2004), Head of music department and then associate dean at Missouri State Univ., born in Hays, Kansas.

1954 Per Nielsen, Danish trumpeter, studied internationally, served in the Danish military, principal in the Sønderjyllands Symfoniorkester, sold many solo recordings, born in Sønderborg, Denmark.

1963 Walter White, American trumpeter and composer, played with Bob James, Dave Holland, Woody Herman, LCJO, Gunther Schuller, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Maynard Ferguson Band and the Dave Matthew's Manhattan Jazz Orchestra, born in Detroit, Michigan.

1965 Hannes Rux, German trumpeter, studied with Edmund Buschinger and Friedemann Immer, performed with the Concerto Köln, Musica Antiqua Köln, and many other early music groups on baroque trumpet, born in Velbert-Neviges, Germany.

1968 Thorsten Benkenstein, German jazz trumpeter, performed with Rhythm Combination & Brass, Vienna Art Orchestra, Thilo Berg Big Band, Bob Brookmeyer's New Art Orchestra, lead trumpet with Gansch & Roses, born in Bremen, German.
