This Day In Trumpet History

1906 Rafael Méndez, Mexican trumpeter, composer and arranger, began at age 5, played for Pancho Villa and his troops, played for President Cárdenas, traveled to the U.S. to the Midwest, began playing for several theaters in Flint and Detroit, Michigan, suffered lip injury in 1932 forcing him to return home where his father helped him play again, returned to U.S. and began playing in NYC and then in LA as a studio musician, made solo recordings and began touring as soloist, began to suffer asthma and sustained baseball accident which greatly limited playing in the last decades of his life, born in Jiquilpan, Michoacán, Mexico.

1909 Philip Bate, British historian and author, worked in BBC television, producing ballets for TV, collected musical instruments beginning in the late 1950s, cofounded the Galpin Society, wrote articles for the Grove Dictionary, authored The Trumpet and Trombone (1966), donated musical instrument collection to Oxford University, born in Glasgow, Scotland.

1921 Hanne Wilfert, German jazz trumpeter, played with many jazz bands in Germany and was studio performer, born in Rodewisch, Germany.

1940 Henderson White, American instrument maker, began an instrument repair business in the 1890s in Cleveland, developed a "King-model" through consultation with Thomas King, principal trombonist of the Lyceum Theater Orchestra, began making instruments under the name H.N. White Company, died on this day.

1994 Stan Roderick, British trumpeter, moved to London in 1930s to play in big bands of Henry Hall and Bram Marin, later with Ted Heath, served with the Black Watch Regiment in Dunkirk in WWII--suffering shell shock that caused nerve problems through career, after war, played in many bands and was studio player, known for beautiful melodic playing, died on this day.
