Malcolm Arnold, British trumpeter, composer and conductor, 2nd tpt in the London Philharmonic Orch in 1942 (principal in 1943), assigned to Army band, which he didn’t like so he shot himself in the foot to return to civilian life, played 1 season with the BBC Symph, returned to principal with LPO for 2 years, quit playing to compose and conduct, earned an Academy Award, hospitalized for depression and alcoholism but recovered, knighted in 1993, died in Norwich, England.
