Joseph Allen, American instrument designer and manufacturer, made his first brass instrument in Massachusetts in 1839 (a keyed bugle in Eb), made his first valved instrument in 1842, invented the “flat windway valve” (a rotary valve), made hundreds of instruments for military bands during Civil War, moved his business (now Allen Manufacturing Co) to NYC then Boston after war, born in Holland, Massachusetts.
