This Day In Trumpet History

1911 George Swift, British trumpeter, studied with his father, at 10 years old played in the Bolden Colliery Band, then the Hebburn Colliery Band and the Marsden Colliery Band, at 15, joined St. Hilda's Colliery Band, at 19, joined the London Sonora Band (a touring dance band), during WWII played with the Band of the Irish Guards, after War, joined the Sydney Kaye Orchestra and was leading freelance musician, joined the Mantovani orchestra in 1960, lived in Spain off and on from 1960s, premiered Iain Hamilton's Concerto for Jazz Trumpet with the Royal Philharmonic in 1957, born in South Shields, England.

1917 Nelson Williams, American jazz trumpeter, played in territory bands, musical direction tor of the Dixie Rhythm Girls, played with Tiny Bradshaw's group, served in US Army in WWII, after which played with several bands including Duke Ellington (who called him "Cadillac"), moved to Paris, France and recorded frequently, later moved to the Netherlands, born in Montgomery, Alabama.

1929 Pierre Cox, Belgian trumpeter, 2nd in 1950 Geneva Competition, 3rd then principal in Liège Opera (later Orch of Liège), taught at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Liège, born in Liège, Belgium.

1962 Ralph Himmler, versatile German trumpeter, performed with such groups as the Dutch Jazz Orch, RIAS Dance Orch, the Winestreet Dixie Company ensemble, prof at the Saarland School of Music, born in Landau, Germany.

1966 Johann Konnerth, Romanian trumpeter, after military service emigrated to Germany, principal of the Ulm Philharmonic Orch, member of the Baden-Wurttemberg Brass Quintet, won competitions in Würzburg and Ulm, born in Sighisoara, Romania.

1973 Nicholas Payton, American jazz trumpeter, grew up in musical family in New Orleans, played with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, toured with Marcus Roberts, played with and directed Elvin Ray Jones' Jazz Machine, formed his own group to record with Verve Records, leader of the Louis Armstrong revival band, played with The Blue Note 7, toured with the Barcelona Jazz Orch, born in New Orleans, Louisiana.

1994 Hannes Kottek, Austrian trumpeter, member and later lead trumpet of the Vienna Art Orchestra, played with the Vienna Opera Orchestra, broadway show musician, died in Vienna, Austria.

2011 Uan Rasey, American trumpeter, considered one of the top studio trumpeters ever, recorded over 2,500 film and tv soundtracks, lost the use of both legs from polio at age 10, performed with Benny Goodman, Warner Bros, Bob Crosby and Paul Whiteman after graduating from high school, staff musician with Mutual Radio station, MGM studio musician (first trumpet from 1948-79), died in Los Angeles, California.
