Lester Bowie, American jazz trumpeter, played with various R&B bands in his teens, joined the US Air Force at 17 (1958-60), established the Black Artists Group in St. Louis, became studio musician in Chicago, president of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, helped form the avant-garde jazz quintet Art Ensemble of Chicago, born in Frederick, Maryland.
