Emery (“Fats”) Thompson (aka Umar Uthman Sharif), American jazz trumpeter, at 14 played with the Music Masters (1941), Jimmy Lunceford’s band, left college to join Snookum Russell’s Band in Oklahoma City, played with Louis Armstrong (1944-46), played with many other bands, stopped playing trumpet to teach Islam, born in Norcross, Georgia.
