W.C. Handy, toured as soloist with Mahara’s Minstrels (1896-1900), taught at the Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical College, directed the Knights of Pythias band, formed his own band (the Memphis Orchestra), toured with Jelly Roll Morton and with Clarence Davis, founded the Pace and Handy Music Company (1918), produced a concert of African-American music at Carnegie Hall (1938), featured composer of NBC Radio concert (1940), known as “The Father of the Blues,” born in Florence, Alabama.
