This Day In Trumpet History

1904 Wilhelm Wurm, German cornetist, member of the Imperial Theater Orchestra in St. Petersburg, member of the ballet orchestra of the Mariinsky Theater, toured Russia as cornet soloist (1869-1889), known for his lyrical playing, became chief bandmaster of the Guards' military bands, taught at the St. Petersburg Conservatory (1868-1904), advocated lip and mouthpiece buzzing (like Joseph Fröhlich in 1811), composed brass chamber music, died in St. Petersburg, Russia.

1918 Lester Remsen, American trumpeter, winner of the Herbert L. Clarke-sponsored National Cornet Solo Contest, Solo Cornet with the U.S. Marine Band in Washington during WWII, principal with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and then the Los Angeles Philharmonic, teacher of Thomas Stevens, Mario Guarneri and Ronald Romm, founder of the Los Angeles Brass Society, recording engineer and producer, born in Akron, New York.

1943 (William) Ritchie Clendenin, American trumpeter and cornetist, member of the US Marine Band in Washington, DC (1967-71), trumpet professor at Cal State Fresno (1973-2002), member of the Colorado Brass Quintet, New Haven SymphonyOrchestra, Colorado Music Festival Orchestra, cornet soloist of the WSC Colorado Brass Band, born in Columbia, South Carolina.

1948 Luc Capouillez, Belgian trumpeter, member of the Orchestre de Liège, Grand Orchestre Symphonique de la RTB-BRT in Brussels, Camerata del Monte, Trio Adolphe Sax, Villach Band, leader of the Luc Capouillez Brass Ensemble, born in Lessines, Belgium.

1960 Ginger Turner, American trumpeter, member of US Army Field Band achieving the rank of Sergeant Major, active in the International Women's Brass Congress, born in Austin, Texas.

1976 Bobby Hackett, American jazz cornetist, soloist with the Benny Goodman band, Eddie Condon, and Jack Teagarden, formed his own band for a performance at the 1939 New York World's Fair, member of the Glenn Miller band (where he played guitar mostly), studio musician for NBC, ABC, television actor on the Jackie Gleason show, known for his smooth playing, died in Chatham, Massachusetts.
