Buck Clayton, American jazz trumpeter, shortly after high school worked in LA with Duke Ellighew, the Irving Brothers, Lavern Floyd and others, took over Earl Dancer’s band, toured with this band to China from 1934-5, took job in Count Basie’s band as main trumpet soloist from 1936-43, during WWII played in Army bands led by Sy Oliver and Mercer Ellington, after his service, played with Norman Granz’s Jazz at the Philharmonic, toured Europe with Mezz Mezzrow, played with Benny Goodman (1955-6), died in NYC.
