Ray Nance, American jazz trumpeter and violinist, played with the Rhythm Rascals, formed a sextet in Chicago (1932-6), played with the Earl Hines big band (1937-8), Horace Henderson (1939-40), replaced Cootie Williams in the Duke Ellington orchestra (1940-63), when Williams returned to the Ellington orchestra, became uncomfortable and began to have drinking problem, fired by Ellington, freelanced for remainder of career, born in Chicago, Illinois.
