This Day In Trumpet History

1918 Howard ("Maggie") McGhee, American jazz trumpeter and composer, important bebop trumpeter on the Dial label, playing with Charlie Parker on the West Coast, voted best trumpeter by Downbeat (1949), became addicted to heroin and faded from limelight, born in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

1925 Roy Etzel, Polish jazz trumpeter, toured with the Hugo Strasser Orchestra, formed his own big band called Soundorchestra Ray Etzel, born in Wroclaw, Poland.

1942 Charles Tolliver, American trumpeter, studied pharmacy but dropped out to play in the 1960s with Jackie McLean, Joe Henderson, Archie Sheep, Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, Roy Haynes and many other great jazz artists, formed his own quartet called Music Inc., voted top trumpeter in Downbeat's Critics Choice poll (1968), born in Jacksonville, Florida.

1943 Ronald ("Spanky") Davis, American jazz trumpeter, played with many jazz groups in NYC, including Charlie Palmer, Benny Goodmans' sextet, Frank Sinatra and Tito Puente, born in Indianapolis, Indiana.

1957 Jean-François Michel, Swiss trumpeter, principal of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra (1976-86), afterwards teaching in several conservatories in Switzerland, toured as soloist, prolific arranger and composer, born in Fribourg, Switzerland.

1962 Wolfgang Guggenberger, German trumpeter (not to be confused with Munich trumpeter of same name), played with the National Theater Orchestra in Mannheim, the Opera House and Museum Orchestra in Frankfurt, Bayreuth festival orchestra, born in Memmingen, Bavaria.
