Armando Ghitalla, American trumpeter, studied with Joseph Gustat, played in Navy dance band during WWII, studied with Vacchiano (1946-49), member of the NY City Opera and NY City Ballet orchestras, principal of Houston Symphony Orchestra, selected as 2nd for the Boston Symphony/1st in the Boston Pops, then in 1965 appointed principal of the BSO (delayed a year of treatment for cancer of the lip), retired in 1979, known as one of the world’s first classical trumpet soloists, professor at Univ. of Michigan and later at Rice Univ., died in Houston, Texas.
