Ishmael Wadada Leo Smith, American trumpeter and composer, began playing locally at age 13, enlisted in military, after service, performed with Roscoe Mitchell and the Creative construction Company trio, member of the AACM, started his own record label, formed band called New Delta Ahki, wrote book on his own creative philosophy, recipient of composition grants and commissions, taught at the Univ of New Have, Creative Music Studio, Bard College, and the Herb Alpert School of Music, dir of African-American Improvisational Music, born in Leland, Mississippi.
