John Coles, American jazz trumpeter, played in an Army band in WWII, after his service joined Slappy and his Swingers, Eddie Vinson, Bull Moose Jackson and Earl Bostic, Philly Joe Jones, James Moody, Gil Evans and Miles Davis (1958-66), Charles Mingus’ Sextet (1964), Herbie Hancock’s band, toured with Ray Charles (1969-70 and 74-75), Duke Ellington (1970-73), Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers (1976), and Count Basie Orchestra (1985-6), died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
