Chet Baker, American singer and jazz trumpet legend, joined army at age 16 (jazz musician in Germany from 1946-8), rejoined Army in 1950 (stationed in Arizona) then deserted, played with Charlie Parker, in a quartet with Gerry Mulligan, heroin addict (and imprisoned many times for possession), teeth beaten in by drug dealers, playing returned after many years with help from Dizzy Gillespie and Gerry Mulligan, born in Yale, Oklahoma.
