Woody Shaw, great American jazz trumpeter, played with various bands as a teenager, recorded at 19 on Eric Dolphy’s Iron Man album, played with Kenny Clarke, Bud Powell and other in the 1960s in Europe, returning to the US, played with Horace Silver’s quintet (1965), Chick Corea (1966), Jackie McLean (1967, 8), McCoy Tyner, Art Blakey (1969) and Max Roach (1968-9), played in various Broadway shows from 1965-70, formed a quintet with Joe Henderson, played in the Junior Cook-Louis Hayes Quintet becoming leader with Cook left (renamed later the Dexter Gordon Quintet) recording many important albums, declining health marked his life in the 1980s as he lived and taught abroad, born in Laurinburg, North Carolina.
